Joseph Parks Passed Away Sunday Eve
Pioneer Resident of Birchdale Township --83 Years Old
Retired From Farm in 1930 and Moved to Sauk Centre
Joseph H. Parks, pioneer resident of Birchdale Township, passed away at his home on Southeast street in this city Sunday evening at 10:15 o'clock. He had been ill for the pat four years but was able to be up and around until three months ago when he was confined helplessly to his bed. He had reached the ripe age of 83 years 8 months and 25 days.
Mr. Parks was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on January 4, 1852. When he was a year old his parents moved westward to St Paul where they resided for a short time and came to St. Cloud. The family resided there until the deceased was 14 years old, when they moved to this community, and took a homestead in Birchdale Township.
On December 4, 1888, Mr. Parks was united in marriage to Miss Millie Baker, the ceremony being performed in Sauk Centre. With the exception of five years spent near Westport and six months in Kandota Township, Mr. and Mrs. Parks spent most of their married life farming in Birchdale. Mr. Parks, owing to poor health was force to retire from farming the 1930 and the family moved to this city, where they have since resided in the home on Southeast street.
Besides the bereaved widow, there are six surviving children, as follows: Clarence A. Parks of Sauk Centre; Mrs. Nels Orvaar, (Florence), Willmar; Mrs. William Kurrell, (Mildred), Sauk Centre; Lawrence Parks, Birchdale; Mrs. Melvin Olson (Jessie), Verndale; Everett C. Parks, Sauk Centre. There were three children who preceded the father in death, two of them having passed away in infancy. Clayton A. Parks was killed in France in 1918 while serving country as message bearer.
There are also eight grandchildren and a number of surviving brothers and sisters as follows: Mrs. James Neal, Sauk Centre; Mrs. Bella Click, Upsala; Mrs. Mary DeGreef, Big Stone City, SD; Mrs Jessie Jansen, Edgerley, ND; Simon Parks, Akeley.
The last sad rites were held at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon at Congregational Church in this city with the Rev. P.J. Jansen assisted by Rev. J.D. Butler in charge. Burial was made in Greenwood Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Alex Dryden, Frank Connelly, Jos. Kuba, Chas. Parkinson, Frank Pang burn and C. R. Bruce.
Through his long years of residence in this community Mr. Parks has made many friends who sincerely regret his passing.
Those from out-of-town attending the service were: Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Olson and baby of Verndale.
