Odell "Parker" Boston
1921 - 2007
Odell "Parker" Boston March, 14. 1921 - July 31, 2007 Greenlawn Mortuary Odell "Parker" Boston was born on March 14, 1921 in Pierce, Oklahoma. She was the seventh of eight children born to William Henry Parker and Mary Ellen Baggett. She was childhood friends with the Boston family and became much more when she met her friend, Nell Boston's brother, George. At that time she was in high school. George, or as he was known by family and friends, "Bud", courted her for a time, but then moved to California. Love surmounted all and he proposed by letter. They were married on August 5, 1942 in Checotah, Oklahoma. He brought her to California and they settled for a time in Famoso, where they lived with other family members in a tent. Odell worked in a diner as a waitress. From that humble beginning, they moved to Bakersfield, where they resided the rest of their lives. Odell was known as "Mom" or "Nana" to all she met but especially to the family she left behind. Survivors include her children, George W. (Sandy) Boston, Judy Boston, and Doug (Tillie) Boston; grandchildren, George E. (Kelly) Boston, Darren (Pamela) Atkison, Cheryl Boston Adams (Glenn), Nicole Atkison Hyer (Blake), and Brian Atkison. She was blessed with seven great-grandchildren, all born in the last six years, Hailey Atkison, George and Jadyn Boston, Kiley and Audrey Adams, Ashley and Holly Hyer. Her brother- in-law, George Engelman, married her best friend, Nell and has remained close throughout the years, even though both their spouses preceded them in death. Her niece, Matilda Keller, held a special place in her heart, and was lovingly known as "Sacramento Tilli". Four sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews are also left to mourn her passing. Odell spent her life caring for her family, her pets, her garden and all who crossed her path. Her "babies", Sugar, Punkin, and Cotton were her furry companions and comfort in the last seven years of her life after she lost her husband. She passed away at home July 31, from cancer that had spread through her body. She never complained and was always grateful for all the kindness shown to her. She was and will be, the example we will try to follow. The family wishes to thank Optimal Hospice with a special appreciation to Jennifer McClintock for her loving care. Viewing will be Sunday, August 5, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (August 5th would have been her 65th anniversary with her beloved "Bud", but we know they are celebrating together now). Services will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Blvd., at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 6, 2007.
