Mrs. Henricks was born on February 5, 1931 in Ontario, LaGrange County, IN, the seventh child of Fred O. and Anna Mae (Boyd) Parish.
Dona Gene earned a BA in music from Ball State University in 1952, where she belonged to Sigma Alpha Iota, a national music sorority. While a member there she was chosen to solo with a piano concerto in the Muncie Civic Symphony and earned the Sword of Honor, an award for the most outstanding woman musician. She also earned a MA from Western Michigan University.
Dona Gene taught for 29 years at Lima School and Lakeland Jr. High including orchestra, band, choir, elementary music, jr. high music, and directed 29 musicals. She also taught private piano and group instrumental lessons. For many years, she played the organ for St. James Chapel Episcopal Church, where she was also a member. She was also a member of MENC, IMEA, DAV Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, and Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Henricks enjoyed talking with former students and telling stories of her beloved years of teaching. She also loved reminiscing with her grandchildren and great grandchildren about her husband, parents, brothers, and sisters. Her favorite hobbies were gardening and tending to her flowers. She would often talk about how God has blessed her and guided her throughout her life.
On July 21, 1952, Dona Gene married Walter W. “Mike” Henricks in Howe, IN. He preceded her in death on December 23, 2007.
Surviving is a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Gary Boals of Howe, IN; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael F. “Fred” and Jayne Henricks of Sturgis, MI; five grandchildren, Jessica (Boals) and Art Givens of Howe, IN, Rudy and Amanda Boals of Middlebury, IN, Katie (Boals) and Jeff Bowman of Howe, IN, Mollie (Henricks) and Josh West of Kalamazoo, MI, and Anna (Henricks) and Kyle Mercer of Sturgis, MI; six great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Ava Boals, Xander and Zoey Bowman, Aidan and Liam Givens;and a sister-in-law, Rush Parish of LaGrange, IN.
Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David W. Henricks; three sisters, Evelyn Paish, Ilene Nelson, and Vivian Smith; and three brothers, Vernal O. Parish, Evan J. Parish, and Warren F. Parish.
The family would like to thank Parkview Home Health and Hospice and especially their nurses, Fran and Tabitha, along with all of the staff at Miller’s Merry Manor for all of their excellent care and support during the final months of Dona Gene’s life.
