Birth: unknown
Death: May 25, 2010

Edith W. Parent, 82, an administrative assistant and Democratic committeewoman, died May 25 at Vitas Hospice in Philadelphia.
Born in New York City, she moved to Philadelphia while a young woman and worked for many years as an administrative assistant in health care positions.

In the 1960s, Parent was a committeewoman in the Democratic Party serving under the Honorable Charles Durham, and later Nate Clark in the 24th Ward for Powelton Village and became active in the group East Powelton Concerned Residents.

The EPCR opposed the condemnation of owner-occupied housing in the eastern sector of Powelton Village in favor of Drexel University, and elsewhere in West Philadelphia in favor of the University of Pennsylvania.

Parent's address to City Council and the Redevelopment Authority on behalf of EPCR fell on deaf ears. Through the pro bono work of attorney Janet Stoltland, EPCR won a consent decree in Federal Court in 1976, by which condemned houses would be spared from demolition simply to become institutional lawns and parking lots, and would be revested and rehabilitated as homes for the community.

She also defended the interests of neighbors and neighborhood organizations threatened to be marginalized by eminent domain.

Parent is survived by her niece-in-law, Sherry Baron; great-nephew Michael Seth Baron; great-niece Roshanna Baron; and a great-great-niece and nephew.
