John (Johannes) Pape was the oldest of four living sons of Jacob Pape and Maria Elisabeth Gierse. John came to the USA from Boedefeld, Westphalia, Germany, in 1880. One brother, Joseph, stayed in Germany, while two others (Anton, along with first wife Regina and son Hugo; and Lorenz, along with seven of his eight children) also came to the United States. John became a US citizen on 15 August 1892.

Gertrude Kramer was his second wife, whom he married in 1888; they had seven children. His first wife and two daughters by her died in Germany. His third wife was Hedwige Agnes Burkhardt Reimer, who died 16 May 1937. Her previous husband was Christian A. Reimer, who died 9 October 1922 and was transferred from the Calvary Cemetery 25 May 1937 to the Pape family plot at St. Henry's. John was a carpenter and later a dry goods merchant (Senge & Pape) in Evanston and north Chicago. He died at age 94 from liver cancer, chronic myocarditis and arteriosclerosis.
