TABB - Elsie Page Carpenter, "Miss Elsie," widow of Samuel Tilden Carpenter, 87, died Monday, May 9, 1994. A native of York County, she was a lifelong resident of the Peninsula. She taught school in Poquoson and York County for 33 years. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg and Madison College in Harrisonburg. A charter member of the York Retired Teachers' Association and a life member of the Virginia Parent Teacher Association, she was a member of Bethel Baptist church, Tabb, since 1926, former director and teacher of the Primary Sunday School Department of the church for more than 50 years and a member of the Malvary Howard Sunday School Class and Elsie Carpenter WMU group at Bethel. She was a member of the York-Poquoson Women's Christian Temperance Union and a member of the Charles Parish Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survived by a daughter, Beatrice Carpenter Hoyt of Hummelstown, Pa.; a sister, Elizabeth Page Smith of Tabb; three grandchildren, Carmen and Chris Hoyt of Pennsylvania and Curtis Hoyt of Long Island, N.Y.; and three great-grandchildren, Chrystal, Derek and Bradley.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 12, at 11 a.m. in Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Franklin D. Hall and Rev. Harold Crute. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News. The family will receive their friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. Memorials to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 1004 Yorktown Road, Yorktown, Va. 23693.
