Lieutenant Garlan A. Packard, one of six brothers in the armed service, was instantly killed in an automobile accident at Barstow, Calif., at noon last Saturday, according to word received by his mother, Mrs. Harry Combs of Lafayette.

Lt. Packard entered the Army three years ago and was stationed at Los Angeles. Born three miles southwest of Mulberry, he was a graduate of the Dayton high school and attended Purdue university.

The five surviving brothers are: Lt. Charles E., of Dallas, Tex.; Lt. Woodrow W., of Ft. Bragg, S. C.; Pfc. Christian C., of Camp Wheeler, Ga., and Marine Lt. Bronson and 5/Sgt. Norville M., both stationed in the South Pacific. A sister, Mrs. Evangeline Lutz of Mishawaka, also survives.

The body is en route to the Baker Funeral Home at Dayton, where funeral rites will be conducted at 2 p. m. Saturday afternoon by the Rev. C. B. Roush of Stockwell. Burial will be at the Newcomer cemetery.

Three of the brothers, Lieutenants Charles E. and Woodrow, and Pfc. Christian, have arrived to attend the funeral.
