Born as Charles Ugeen Owston to George Arthur Owston and Emily Christine Hamilton. Like his father, he later changed his surname to Austin when living in Rochester, NY.
He was married to Margaret Prouse in Port Hope, Ontario in 1893, but they were later divorced.
Married Velma Zimmer in Rochester, NY on 8 September 1909.
CHARLES U. AUSTIN DIES
Charles U. Austin, 99 Savannah Street, a former sheet metal worker died of a heart attack yesterday (Feb. 14, 1955)., he was 82. Mr. Austin was employed by the William S. Schmidt Sheet Metal Co. before his retirement some years ago. At one time, he had operated his own sheet metal shop in Monroe avenue. He was a native of Rockford, Ill. [sic Iowa] and had made his home in Savannah street for the last 40 years. Surviving are a brother, Wilfred of Honeyoye, and one sister, Mrs. Sibyl Wagner. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Ryan & McIntee Inc. funeral parlors, 207 Chestnut St. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
He played a variety of stringed instruments, but favored the mandolin.
Died of arteriosclerosis.
According to his niece, Mabel Lisson (8 APR 1991), "The family would get together and play music. Grandfather (George A. Austin) on violin, Uncle Charley (Charles U. Austin) on mandolin, father (Wilfred G. Ouston) on piano, Duffy, who was a friend of Uncle Charley's, played guitar and Uncle Archie or Archibald (James Archibald – husband of George's daughter Alice), played banjo. Austin T. Wagner (Sybil's son), the oldest of that family, was a drummer."
