ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Winifred Katherine Herndon, 102, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Anne's Episcopal Church. Private graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Arlington National Cemetery with the Rev. Gid Montjoy officiating. Arrangements are by George P. Kalas Funeral Home of Edgewater.
Mrs. Herndon was born Feb. 27, 1906, in Savannah, Ga., to Charlotte Katherine and John Elias Owens, and grew up in Newport News, Va. She was the eldest of three daughters.
She attended business school in Linthicum Heights before enrolling in William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va., graduating in 1929 with a B.A. in English and history.
She taught school in Fort Eustis, Va., where she met Lt. Carl B. Herndon. They were married Sept. 3, 1932, thus beginning her life as an Army wife.
During her husband's tours of duty with the U.S. Army, they lived in Georgia, Zamboanga, Philippines, where she again taught school, Rhode Island, Panama, Louisiana, Maryland, Kansas, Virginia and Germany.
She was a member of the Altar Guild of Trinity Episcopal Church in Newport, R.I., for 28 years, AAUW (American Association of University Women), Colonial Garden Club of Annapolis and St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Annapolis.
She was preceded in death by her husband in December 1964; her parents; two sisters, Ellison Owens Morton and Olwen Owens Kurdle; a grandson, Vincent R. Tubbs, in 1994; and two nephews, Joseph Kurdle and Albert Kurdle.
Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte H. "Missie" Tubbs of Annapolis and Elinor F. "Poppy" McCarty and husband William "Bill" of Amarillo, Texas; five grandchildren, Terrie Tubbs of Carmichael, Calif., Douglas McCarty of Phoenix, Robyn McCarty of Austin, Texas, Heidi Milton and husband of Marietta, Ga., and Laurie Layne and husband Eric of Pflugerville, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Erin, Alec and Jack de Freitas, all of Marietta, and Patrick, William and Catherine Layne, all of Pflugerville; two nieces, Patricia Manspeaker of St. Michaels and Susan Bailey; a niece-in-law, Becki Kurdle; two nephews, Kyle Kurdle and Christopher Kurdle; and several cousins, Hunter, Paul Joseph and Ned Kesmodel, Molly Kesmodel, Kate Ellsworth and Joe Hunter and wife Betty.
The family suggests memorials be to St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 199 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis, MD 21401; Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401; or a favorite charity.
