DR. IRIS MIROY OVSHINSKY
Iris Miroy was the daughter of Andre and Anita Miroy of New York. She earned a bachelor of zoology from Swarthmore College in 1947, a masters degree in biology from University of Michigan in 1950, and a doctorate in chemistry from Boston University in 1960.
She had two children, Robin and Steven Dibner, with her first husband, before divorcing in 1959. She remarried in 1960 to Stanford Ovshinsky, who had three sons by a former marriage.
Stanford R. Ovshinsky and his wife, Dr. Iris Miroy Ovshinsky, founded Energy Conversion Devices Inc. in the Detroit, MI area in 1960. The company developed and applied his inventions to the fields of information and energy.
Both Iris and Stan were committed to human and equal rights, and were advocates of labor, civil rights and peace movements.
Iris is survived by her beloved husband, Stanford R. Ovshinsky. Dear mother of Robin Dibner, Steven Dibner, Ben (Eileen) Ovshinsky, Harvey (Cathie) Ovshinsky, and Dale Ovshinsky. Loving grandmother of Natasha Ovshinsky, Noah Ovshinsky, Sylvie Polsky and Pablo Dibner. Also survived by many loving friends and devoted colleagues around the world.
A gathering for family, friends, and colleagues was held on Sunday, August 20, 2006 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Dorfman Chapel, Farmington Hills, MI. A memorial tribute was held at a later date. Private interment was held on Monday, Aug. 21, at Workmen's Circle Cemetery, Akron, OH.
