Sarah Overstreet Barrow, 78, role model and friend to many, died Aug. 18, 1997.
Born in Norfolk, Mrs. Barrow was the daughter of James Richard Overstreet and Fawnie Snow Burnette Overstreet, both of Moneta, Va. A 1937 graduate of Maury High School, she married her childhood sweetheart, Gene Barrow, in 1939 and was widowed in 1990. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dick and Sanford.
Always an active leader in Lynnhaven Colony Congregational Church, Mrs. Barrow was its first woman Moderator. With her late husband, she also founded the Church's ''Art Dabblers'' group.
An accomplished watercolorist, gardner, seamstress and artisan, Mrs. Barrow also found time to be an officer and leader of the Lynnhaven Colony Garden Club, serve as the ''Sunshine Lady'' of AARP chapter 992, and participate in NARFE chapter 974. In the past, she belonged to the Chesapeake Bay Watercolorist and the Alpha Rho Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.
Although a resident of Hampton Roads for most of her life, Mrs. Barrow lived with her husband in Kill Devil Hills, N.C., from 1974-1978 and in Venice, Fla., from 1978-1985, where they stayed busy with many friends in church and art organizations.
Survivors include her son, Timothy E. Barrow, and his wife, Paige Valentine Barrow, of Virginia Beach; a granddaughter, Shannon Leigh Barrow, and a grandson, Timothy Sloan Barrow, both of Alexandria; two nieces, Barbara Stephens of Virginia Beach and Leigh Hagar of Big Bear Lake, Calif.; three nephews, Jeff Barrow of New Bern, N.C., Steve Overstreet of Winter Springs, Fla., and Tom Overstreet of Highland Park, Ill.; and four sisters-in-law, Katherine Barrow of Virginia Beach, Marie Barrow of Charlottesville, Betty Overstreet Bowles of Cordova, Tenn., and Signa Overstreet Weston of Colton, Calif.
A celebration of Sarah Barrow's life will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Dinges and the Rev. Thomas Britton at noon on Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997, in Lynnhaven Colony Congregational Church, 2217 W. Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to her church's Building Fund or to a favorite charity. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road, is handling arrangements.
