Ray Overholt, age 84, of Battle Creek, died Sunday, September 14, 2008 at his residence. Ray was born on July 24, 1924 in Dutton, Michigan, the son of Myron (Mike) and Clara (Davis) Overholt. He was a 1942 graduate of Middleville High School. He had been a Battle Creek area resident for 56 years. Ray was a veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force. In Battle Creek, on May 26, 1956, he was united in marriage to the former Mildred "Millie" L. Morford, who survives. Ray was a well known song writer. In 1958, while writing one of his most well known songs, "Ten Thousand Angels", Ray had a life changing experience. Under the ministry of Leo and Nancy Swank, he became a born again Christian and shortly afterwards was called into full-time music/evangelistic ministry, which he and his wife Millie continued for 48 years. He continued to write many gospel songs such as "Hallelujah Square" which was nominated for the Gospel Music Dove Awards for three consecutive years. He was scheduled to sing in Grand Rapids, MI, Sunday afternoon and went to be with his Lord as he was preparing to leave. He attended the Family Altar Chapel, was ordained through House of Prayer and was a member of the Michigan Gospel Music Association. Surviving are a son, Ron (Margaret) Overholt of Grand Rapids; 3 grandchildren, Tony (Sue) Overholt of Grand Rapids, Becky (Rev. Travis) Davis of Battle Creek and Ron Gorman (Melissa) of Grand Rapids; 5 great- grandchildren and 1 great- great-grandchild; 2 brothers, Don (Bernie) Overholt of Caledonia and Roger (Loretta) Overholt of Oklahoma; and a sister, Lucy (Wendall) Long of Caledonia. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Overholt. Visitation will be held Thursday from 2 to 4:00 p.m. and 6 to 8:00 p.m. at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 19, 2008 at the First Assembly of God, 800 S. 24th Street, with the Rev. Travis Davis officiating. Interment will be at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or the Disabled Veterans of America.
