A.J. OUTHOUSE DIES AFTER MONTH'S ILLNESS

Deceased Was Homesteader and Rancher in Early Day--In Business Later--Commissioner
*******
A.J. Outhouse passed away Sunday following a month's illness. Mr. Outhouse, who was taken to the Ainsworth Hospital on Monday, January 4th, seemed to be making a little progress in spite of the fact his heart was very weak. The heart weakness is reported to have been a direct cause of his death.

The deceased faithfully served Keya Paha County as commissioner of the central district for two terms in connection with duties of operating his grocery store.

Joseph Alma Outhouse was born June 27, 1863 at Turin, Monona County, Iowa. Died in the Ainsworth Hospital Sunday, January 10, 1937 at the age of 73 years, 6 months and 13 days.

A.J., as he was known, grew to manhood in Monona County, Iowa and was married February 5, 1882 to Mary Jane Hutchison, who preceded him in death November 25, 1907.

To this union were born six children, George, who died in infancy, Grover, who died in Keya Paha County, Nebraska, August 20, 1910, Mrs. Gertie Hollenbeck of Springview, Mrs. Bertha Shepperd of Burton, Nebraska, Grant of Flat Top, Wyoming, and William of Gibbon, Nebraska. In 1914 he was married to Mattie Ashley, who preceded him in death March 20, 1930. He leaves to mourn his passing, besides his immediate family, 16 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, three brothers: Munroe of Morehead, Iowa, David of Lusk, Wyoming, and Will of Sioux City, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. George Flannigan of Winnipeg, Canada, and a host of other friends, relatives and neighbors. His boyhood days were spent along the hills of the Missouri River. He attended school but 180 days in his entire life.

In 1883 he came west, lured by the attractions of a pioneer country. He homesteaded imn Keya Paha County, then a part of Brown County, and built up from a soddy shack the improved and famous Diamond O Ranch now owned by the Thiede brothers. The ranch being known far and wide as a place of hospitality, entertainment and merrymaking.

Notwithstanding his educational advantages, he was successful in his busines endeavors, and the bounty of his friendships was only limited by that of his purse.

While not directly afflicted with any religious denomination, he was honest and upright, and believed in the teachings of the Bible, the Book of Mormon of the Latter Days Saints Church, and the practice of the Golden Rule.

He was a charter member of the Modern Woodmen of America, Local Order, Number 6194, and in good standing at his death.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the M.E. Church, conducted by Rev. Wm. S. Davis, with interment in Mount Hope Cemetery, the Woodmen in charge of the grave ceremonies.
