Mary Hayes, 93, passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2006. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m., Monday, April 24, at Clifton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., April 25, at the First Methodist Church of Clifton, with Rev. Tom Beatty and Rev. Cleon Flanagan officiating. Burial will be at Oswald Cemetery.
Mary was born near Clifton, Bosque County, Texas, to the late Samuel and Lillie Belle Atchison Oswald. She worked at Walls Industries from 1950 to 1968, when she retired due to health problems. She moved to Lubbock, Texas, in 1975 where she continued sewing for her family and baking her well-known banana bread for a family business, Watson Foods. She gave all proceeds from the sale of her bread to her church in Lubbock, and single-handedly paid to air condition the fellowship hall.
Mary moved back to Clifton in 1992, where she continued to bake her bread and was the oldest member of the First United Methodist Church of Clifton. During her life, Mary was actively involved in the outreach groups of the United Methodist Women and she was a dedicated Prayer Warrior for the UMYF. According to those who knew her, she was a genuinely happy person who never met a person she didn't like, and people always seemed to feel the same way about her.
She was preceded in death by both husbands, Ben Lanehart and Roy Hayes; a son, Benny Don Lanehart; two brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include her sons, Darrell Lanehart, of Abilene, and Joe Lanehart, of Lake Mexia; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
