FOREST DALE - Esther M. "Peggy" Capen, 72, died on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at her home in Forest Dale. She was born in Hadley, N.Y., on Sept. 6, 1926. She was the daughter of the Rev. Dennis and Clara (Parker) Osgood. She received her early education in Brandon schools and had attended Brandon High School. On Sept. 22, 1945, she married Robert W. Capen at Forest Dale Wesleyan Church. In her earlier years she had worked at a factory in Proctor turning out gun sights during World War II. She later worked as a hostess and chef at various area restaurants, including the Middlebury Inn and the Brandon Inn. She was a member of the Forest Dale Wesleyan Church. She was very active in church affairs. She had taught Sunday school at the Champlain Conference of The Wesleyan Church in West Chazy, N.Y., every year for more than 50 years. She, as the wife of a Wesleyan clergyman, had served as choir director and church organist as well as being the Christian youth director at the various churches that her husband was assigned to. She was very musically inclined and was accomplished at the organ, accordion and piano. She organized and directed a musical group known as "The Preacher 4 Plus." She was also known as Mrs. Santa Claus for her ability at fund-raising and solicitation for toys for area underprivileged children at Christmastime. She had raised many foster children over the years. She was very proud of obtaining her license as a bus driver. She also did nurses training at Cuba Hospital in Cuba, N.Y., in the early 1960s. Surviving are her husband, Robert W. Capen of Forest Dale; two sons, Robert D. Capen of Rutland and John T. Capen of Brandon; two daughters, Laurie B. Capen of Forest Dale and Aimée J. Capen of Whitehall, N.Y.; one brother, Donald Osgood of Stamford, Conn.; and two sisters, Evangeline Grant of Filmore, N.Y., and Marilyn Ross of Bakers Mills, N.Y. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She vas predeceased by a brother, Derwood Osgood, A funeral service was held Saturday at Forest Dale Wesleyan Church. Burial was in Forest Dale Cemetery.
