Oscar II
Original name:  Oskar Fredrik
Birth: Jan. 21, 1829
Death: Dec. 8, 1907

King of Sweden and Norway. Of the Bernadotte Dynasty and born in Stockholm, he was the third son of King Oscar I and Queen Josephine, a Beauharnais Dynasty princess of Leuchtenberg. He was styled Duke of Ostrogothland (Östergötland). He married Princess Sofia, a daughter of Duke William of Nassau, in June 1857 and with her had four sons. Oscar published several books of verse under his full name and wrote on historical subjects. His best-known work is probably a biography in German of Sweden's Carl XII. He was politically conservative and a Germanophile in as much as he was anti-Russian in his political thinking. In 1872 he succeeded to the throne on the death of his brother Carl XV, whose only son had died in infancy. Oscar II was tall and stately and thoroughly enjoyed being king, often photographed and painted in full regalia, though strangely enough Queen Sofia never was. He was also extremely fond of boating and regularly yachted around his Scandinavian peninsula with male friends, popping in to visit here and there. There were parties aboard and ashore and rumors of a number of extramarital liaisons with young ladies. His policy toward the 'brotherland' Norway denied it its own consular representation, increasing tensions between the two governments in Oslo and Stockholm. As a result, in 1905, Norway severed its union with Sweden, and Oscar was obliged to abdicate the Norwegian throne, which he mourned as deeply if it were a death in the family. The Swedish people staged special manifestations to try to console him. He died two years later at Stockholm Palace at the age of 78 and was succeeded by his son Gustav V. (bio by: Iola)

Your Majesty, I leave this dove as a sign of respect. My great grandfather served under you in the Royal Calvary and was then attached to the palace for the Queen. My family thanks you for your leadership!
