Evelyn Oppenheim Carter, born October 29, 1923, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2012 at 2:30 PM. Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 25, 2012, at 10:00 AM at the Florence City Cemetery with Reverend Doctor Richard Gillespie officiating. Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family. The family will receive family and friends at the Carter home, 470 Palisade Drive, on Sunday afternoon, beginning at 4:00 PM. Evelyn was a graduate of Coffee High School and the University of Alabama, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. She worked as a teacher and later as a librarian at TVA. She was a member of the Muscle Shoals District Service League and a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. John Jefferson Carter and her three sons, Dr. John Jefferson Carter, Jr., and his wife Sherry of Tryon, North Carolina; Thomas Vernon Carter and his wife Ana of Savannah, Georgia; Michael Fuller Carter and his wife Shannon of Florence; and daughter-in-law Dixie Weatherford Carter of Florence. She is also survived by her grandchildren John Berry Carter of Houston, Texas, Christopher Thomas Carter of Savannah, Georgia, and Maggie Carter of Florence. The family appreciates the care and friendship offered by Deborah Darby. In lieu of flowers, because of her love for animals, especially her dog Yorkee, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Florence Animal Shelter Volunteer Program, or First Presbyterian Church of Florence. Pallbearers will be James Megar, Linden Reeder, Goodloe Pride, III, Dave Marbury, Preston Trousdale, and Tom Frith.
