Carol Bernard Hart, a lifelong attorney, social activist and supporter of Jewish causes, passed away Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009. He was 83.
He is survived by his adoring wife, Ricka Brown Hart of Atlanta; two children, Richard Hart and Susan Sandler; their spouses, Sally Hicks and Rabbi Neil Sandler of Ahavath Achim Congregation in Atlanta; five grandchildren, Lillie, Isaac, Ariel, Aliza, and Joshua; his brother, Ellis Hart; and scores of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Carol Hart was born in Beaumont, Texas, to Lillie Oppenheim Hart and Van Eaton Hart, the youngest of four sons. He grew up and spent most of his life in New Orleans, graduating from Isidore Newman School and Tulane University with degrees in business administration and law. He was active in many New Orleans Jewish and civic organizations, including as president of the Southern Jewish Historical Society. He and Ricka moved to Atlanta in April 2007 to be closer to their family.
