Elizabeth "Betty" Fern Olson Durrin went home to be with her Lord and Savior on April 14, 2013. She was born on April 29, 1918 in Bristow, NE to Joseph and Anna (Forsberg) Olson.
She was raised in farming communities in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. She attended 10 different schools. After completing 10th grade in Hamill, she had to stop to help the family.
In the spring of 1936 she met Ralph Durrin on a blind date, and it was "love at first sight" for both of them. He proposed on the third date and her response was, "What took you so long?" They were married on December 31, 1938 in the Colome Methodist Parsonage. They made their home on the farm north of Colome where they lived for 55 years until Ralph went to be with the Lord on February 4, 1994.
They both loved the farm where she learned to milk cows and drive the tractor. Betty and Ralph were blessed (or is that cursed) with three children: Ray, Vicki, and Gary. Betty loved being a mother and a farmer's wife. Her hobbies included: sewing, quilting, crocheting, cooking, baking, reading, and "visiting" with her family and countless friends.
She was a member of the Colome United Methodist Church, UMW, Sully Homemakers Extension Club, Colome "Nifty Ladies" club, and neighborhood "Birthday Club".
After Ralph passed away, she loved to travel on tours and took several "once in a lifetime" trips. She moved to Winner in 2006; her comment was "if I had known it would be this much fun, I would have done it years ago."
Countless gallons of coffee and pounds of kolaches, pies and rolls were enjoyed by Betty and her friends and neighbors. Her grands and great-grands were the loves of her life.
Betty is survived by her children: Ray of Winner, Vicki of rural Dallas, and Gary (Diane) of Winner. Grandchildren: Kristy (Chad), Chad, Kelli (Adam), Jessica, Jenna (Travis), Sid, and Kiersten. Three step-grandchildren: Harold, Chris, and Victor. Great-grandchildren: Andrew, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Gabrielle, Dakota, Laynee, and "Baby" Masur. Sister Edyth Warne and brother JD (Melba) Olson. Numerous nieces and nephews. And a host of dear, dear friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ralph, brothers Archie (Mabel) and Nathan (Betty), sister Evelyn (Clifford) Carlson, brother-in-law ML Warne, great granddaughter Ilamae, and great grandson Dylan.
Betty's heart overflowed with love for each and every one of you!
