Kaye A. Determan, 76, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Tiffany Square.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Resurrection Catholic Church with Father Michael F. McDermott officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island is in charge of the
arrangements.

Kaye was born May 15, 1936, in Madison, South Dakota, to Leonard and Minnie (Hilde) Olson.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Jay; and four daughters and their spouses, Diann Manning, Nancy (Gary) Nolan, Karen (Larry) Terry and Lisa (Doug) Sanders, all of Grand Island.

Also left to cherish her memory are twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; stepmother, Betty Olson of Sioux Falls, SD; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Olson of Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Gary Olson.

Raised on the farm in Nunda and Rutland, S.D.; Kaye attended school in Madison, graduating from Beadle High School in 1954. She attended General Beadle College in Madison, now Dakota State University, receiving her teaching certificate. While in college, she was a cheerleader and varsity queen. Upon her certification, she was a secretary to the Dean of the college.

On July 7, 1956, Kaye was united in marriage to Jay Determan in the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Madison. In 1968, the family moved to Redfield, S.D., where she was a teachers' aide in the school system for four years. They moved to Grand Island in 1972. Kaye was secretary at Newell Elementary School for 14 years and at West Lawn Elementary School for five years. She retired in 1992.

She was a charter member of Resurrection Church in Grand Island.

Kaye was a talented cook and loved to bake, making pies upon request. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed being a grandmother. An amazing woman, she was their special light.
