Funeral services for Geraldine Marie Oliver Barbin of Marksville will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016 beginning at 11am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marksville with Fr. Silverino Kwebuza. Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016 beginning at 8am until 10:30am at the Escude Funeral Home in Mansura with a rosary prayer at 9:45am. Entombment will be held at the St. Joseph #2 Mausoleum in Marksville. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Escude Funeral Home.

Geraldine Oliver Barbin, age 75, was born September 27, 1940 and died on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Riviere de Soleil Community Care Center in Mansura. She was a resident of Marksville and was born & raised in Mansura (Cocoville). Her education began at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Elementary School in Mansura. She obtained her high diploma from Mary Bethune High School in Marksville. She attended Grambling State University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry.

Mrs. Barbin was a teacher for 33 years, including seven years in New York City school system. She also acted as a substitute teacher after retiring from the Avoyelles Parish School System. In addition, she was employed in various positions at Paragon Casino, Allen Canning Company, and The Life Skills Program.

She was a long time member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Marksville. She was passionate about her volunteer work with the church. She participated in various fundraisers, bingos, garage sales, raffles, and soliciting businesses for donations. She loved life, her husband, family, church family, friends at "Senior Citizens," the outdoors, insects, and simple moments, but most of all her God.

In her spare time, she enjoyed ceramics, knitting, crocheting, embroidering, woodcraft, quilting, spending time with her grandkids, playing bingo, collecting insects, gardening, and sitting outside enjoying life with the love of her life, her husband, Furgus "Bob" Barbin. She was involved in various civic activities such as the Ladies' Auxiliary to the V.F.W., sponsor to the Junior Girls & L.T.A., Senior Citizens Assocation, Avoyel-Taensa Indian Tribe, and the NAACP.

Mrs. Barbin is preceded in death by her father, Wilbert Oliver, Sr.; mother, Catherine Oliver; twin brothers, Peter & Paul Oliver; brother, Leon Oliver (Virginia deceased); brother, Carroll Oliver (Jolene); and sister, Elouise Lee (Matthew deceased).

Those left to cherish her memory are her loving and dedicated husband, Furgus Phillip Barbin of Marksville; children: Karl Vance Reed of Marksville; Veronica Marie Reed of New Orleans, Bryan Randall Barbin of Marksville, daughter, Ava Danielle Barbin of Houston, TX, Myra Barbin Williams (Shane) of Alexandria; grandchildren: Austin Christopher Reed (Veronica) of New Orleans, Reagan Marie Barbin (Bryan) of Oakdale, Sawyer David Williams (Myra) of Alexandria; siblings: Catherine "Nanny" Demouy (Marshall deceased) of Mansura, Wilbert Oliver, Jr. (Dorothy) of Chicago, IL, Sr. Mary Laurita Oliver of New Orleans, Jacqueline Batiste (Floyd deceased) of Mansura, sister, Hattie Mae Turner (Jessie) of Alexandria; and a host of family & friends.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Avoyelles Hospital, Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, All Saints Hospice, the staff of Riviere de Soleil Community Care Center, Dr. Bordelon, Dr. Kirkikis, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Synergy Home Health for the love and care they gave to Mrs. Geraldine Barbin during this journey. The family would also like to thank the hose of family members, friends, and loved ones who expressed their love through prayers, food, cards, flowers, texts, calls, and messages.
