Lummie Oliver Worked Hard To Care For Family, Helped Build Church
By Jarred Schenke, MDJ Staff Writer

Longtime Kennesaw resident Lummie Oliver always wanted a big family, with nine children, he got his wish.

As a result though, Mr. Oliver was working all the time to support his family, his daughter Edna Willis said.

"I didn't get to see him much the first few years cause he was working all the time", Mrs. Willis said.

So dedicated to working, Mr. Oliver even once struggled at work while suffering with typhoid fever, she said.

"He worked on his knees because he could hardly stand up." Ms. Willis said.

Lummie E. Oliver, 94, of Kennesaw, died Thursday, May 21.

Being such a hard worker made Mrs. Oliver a very physical person his whole life, the family said. Even up until five months ago, when he broke a hip while moving a cement block, Mr. Oliver was doing yard work with his daughter, she said.

"He was strong for a lot of people," Ms. Willis said.

A native of Pickens County, Mr. Oliver moved to Kennesaw in 1932 and remained there for the rest of his life.

Even after his marriage, Mr. Oliver built a new house just next door to his family's home, she said.

Mr. Oliver worked in maintenance for both Blackwell Elementary School and Kennesaw State University, from which he retired in 1971, the family said.

Mr. Oliver also was a founding member of Freedom Christian Fellowship Church of God, witnessing its growth from 13 members gathered at his family's home to the current 170 member organization in Kennesaw.

Services will 11 a.m. Saturday at Freedom Christian Fellowship Church of God in Kennesaw with the Revs. Billy J. Johnson and J.F. Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Kennesaw City Cemetery. The body will be at the church at 10 a.m.

Survivors include three daughters, Annie Ruth Holloway and Letha Mae Richards, both of Kennesaw, and Edna R. Willis of Acworth; six sons, William B. Oliver and Ruben E. Oliver, both of Acworth, James E. Oliver of Dalton, C. Leon Oliver of Marietta, Raymond L. Oliver of Kennesaw and L.C. Oliver of Cartersville; 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends all day today at Medford-Peden Funeral Home in Marietta.
