DAVID MONROE OLIVE, 82, passed away June 14, 2010. He was born on February 22, 1928 in Haynesville, LA to Boyette Monroe and Emma Catherine Olive. He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, David Monroe Olive, Jr. and brother, Marion Olive. David played football on scholarship at Louisiana Tech for two years before entering the Navy. Stationed in Astoria, Oregon, David met his wife of 61 years, Bernice Layton Olive. Married June 4, 1949, they moved to Houston, Texas where David earned his Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Houston. As a registered P.E. in 3 states and a well-respected mechanical engineer in the Houston area for 58 years, David worked first for Bernard Johnson then for over 35 years at his own firm, Olive Engineers. He was proud of his work at NASA, Jones Hall, area schools, particularly LEED schools, and preserving the old oak tree downtown next to Bayou Place. An avid reader, history buff, and philosopher, David always emphasized the importance of education, returning regularly to the University of Houston and Rice University as guest lecturer in the schools of Engineering and Architecture. David was gentle, warm, funny, generous, a great story-teller and proud to be a dog person, a great beach fort builder and a strong underwater swimmer. David's greatest source of pride was his long marriage and family, especially his three precious grandchildren. David is survived by his beloved wife, Bernice; children, Rebecca Olive Cummings, Catherine Ann Hodil and husband, Earl Hodil; grandchildren, Jenny Cate Hodil, Joshua Hodil, and Elizabeth Cummings; sister, Mollie Jean Coleman; several beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, business colleagues and his faithful dog, Copper. Services for David will be held at the Forrest Park Westheimer Chapel at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 19, with visitation at 1:00 pm. A private family burial will follow.
