FAIRFIELD, ME - Winona O. Cook, of Fairfield, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2009, at Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home in Waterville.
She was born in China on Oct. 27, 1916, the daughter of the late George and Laura (Cole) Odlin.
Winona was a 1934 graduate of Lawrence High School in Fairfield where, during her senior year, she was a member of the state championship basketball team.
On April 16, 1938, she married Carleton V. Cook and together they shared 65 years of marriage until his passing on their anniversary on April 16, 2003.
Her devotion to family and church was very evident over the years. Winona was a very active member of First Baptist Church in Fairfield, where she had taught Sunday school; and was past Sunday school superintendent, member of the Golden Rule Philatheas and member of the Women's Missionary Club. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Fairfield Women's Club, the Lawrence Alumni Association and the Hour Club.
Winona was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. One of her greatest joys was spending time, especially during the holidays, with her family. She also enjoyed spending time at camp on China Lake, fishing, flower gardening, cooking, sewing and knitting.
Besides her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Virgil Odlin; and her sister, Esther Carter.
Winona will be sadly missed by her sons, Keith E. Cook and his wife, Marcia, of Waterville, William P. Cook and his wife, Barbara, of Milford, and Jeffrey O. Cook and his wife, Joanne, of Jefferson; grandchildren Scott Cook and his wife, Megan Landry, of Oakland, Christopher Cook and his wife, Beth, of Hermon, Michael Cook, of Centreville, Va., Laurie Cook, of Portland, Mark Cook and his wife, Jodi, of Arlington, Mass., Catherine Milton and her husband, Glen, of Greenbush, Benjamin Cook and his wife, Alicia, of Waldoboro, and Bryan Cook and Jessica Meier, of Seattle; great-grandchildren Sean Cook, stationed with the Navy in Great Lakes, Ill., Rebecca Cook, of Oakland, Samantha Milton and Michaela Milton, of Greenbush, Libby Cook, of Hermon, Carter Landry, of Oakland, Alison Milton, of Greenbush, Isabelle Cook, of Oakland, and Lucy Crawford Cook, of Arlington, Mass.
The family would like to thank the Woodlands, Mount St. Joseph and the emergency room department as well as the nurses and staff on the second floor of MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer campus, for the wonderful care Winona received. They would also like to thank John Burke, M.D., and his nurse, Emma, for their fine medical care over the years.
A funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, at First Baptist Church on Newhall Street in Fairfield. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Fairfield.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church in Fairfield or to the charity of one's choice.
