Evelyn Marie Bangen, 96, Minot, formerly of Plaza, died, Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, in her home at Brentmoor Assisted Living.

Evelyn was born Nov. 7, 1914, in Minot to Andrew and Marie (Engebretson) Oberg. Evelyn was raised in the Makoti area, where she attended Mountrail consolidated grade school. During this time, she spent her summers working for area farmers doing household and farm chores. Evelyn graduated from Makoti High School in 1937 and moved to Spokane, Wash.

On June 16, 1938, Evelyn was united in marriage to Chester Bangen in Spokane. The couple worked in the orchards of Washington and briefly on a ranch in Montana. In 1941, they moved back to Plaza and started to farm, where they raised small grains. The couple moved into the town of Plaza in 1946 but continued to farm.

Evelyn was dedicated to her family. She worked as a school cook during the 1960s. She was the caretaker for her mother-in-law when she became ill. Chester died in March of 1986. Evelyn moved to Brentmoor Assisted Living in Minot in September of 2002, where she continued a favorite pastime of playing cards.

Evelyn started sewing after the birth of her first child and crafted many special outfits. She enjoyed embroidery, crocheting and quilting, creating many blankets for family and friends. Evelyn loved music and played the mandolin. She was also talented in the kitchen and indulged her family with fresh bread, pies and cakes. She bowled for many years and her team made it to the state tournament one year. Evelyn was a member of First Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and the Senior Citizens Center, all of Plaza.

Evelyn will be dearly missed by her loving family and many friends. Blessed be her memory among us.

Evelyn is survived by: her son, Quentin Bangen (Sharon) of Plaza; daughters, Mavis Schaberg (Wayne) of Minot, Donna Lee (Merle) of Minot, and Vickie Jones (Miles) of Dickinson; sisters, Dorothy Burchill of Minot and Signe Richter of Wenatchee, Wash.; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Jeanette Burchill; and brother, Arthur Oberg.
