Emma taught school in District 8 in the late 1860's when she was in her late teens. Emma Ober lived much of her adult life in the suburbs of Boston after her marriage to William Canavan but returned to Hollis in the 1880's. She and her husband built a new Victorian home on Main Street (39 Main). She became an important influence on Hollis society and in 1906 organized the Hollis Woman's Club of which she became first president. She was also a member of the DAR in Hollis and the Ladies Charitable Reading Society of the Hollis Congregational Church. She was a lover of the Arts, she enjoyed writing and poetry, sometimes writing some of her own.
