Richard was the son of Gottlob and Clara Obenland. For some reason, his father's name is listed as George on his death certificate.

Richard had one older brother, Albert, born in 1894. He also had a younger brother named William, who was born in 1900.

Richard was buried in Philadelphia Cemetery on July 28, 1898. Later, the graves were moved to Ronaldsons Cemetery in Philadelphia. Sometime in the 1950's the graves at that cemetery were moved to Forest Hills Cemetery. One can only assume that the old cemeteries were right in the middle of Philadelphia and the property was worth too much money to use it only as a cemetery!
