A rural Wapello mother of four was apparently killed instantly late Monday night when her northbound auto slammed head-on into a Burlington Truck Lines double-bottom trailer rig on US 61 three miles north of here.
Driver of the truck, Gerald D. Morgan, 58, told highway patrolmen and sheriff's deputies thtat the oncoming car driven by Edith Anna Ashby, 29, was swerving along the road as he came down a hill and was on the wrong side of the pavement when the crash occurred.
Th Moline, Ill. truck driver, hauling two trailers of miscellaneous freight, said he tried to slow down but was unable to miss Mrs. Ashby's auto. Force of the impact threw the truck into the ditch, but Morgan escaped unhurt.
Medical examiner, Dr. H. M. Patterson of Mediapolis pronounced Mrs. Ashby dead; deputies said it took nearly an hour to remove her body from the crumpled wreckage.
Born July 16, 1939, Mrs. Ashby was the daughter of Daniel and Mary O'Neill. She married Harvey Ashby in Mediapolis Dec. 7, 1960.
Surviving; the husband; four children at home, Katheryn, Johnna, Kelli and Daniel; four brothers, William O'Neill of Colorado, James and Robert O'Neill of New London and Thomas O'Neill of Mt. Pleasant; and a sister, Katheryn O'Neill, New London.
Services: Thursday at 2 p.m. in Dudgeon-McCulley funeral home; Wapello cemetery
