Mary Cary was born January 13, 1931, the daughter of Leo Sherlock and Margaret Daley O'Neill. She passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010, in Ames, Iowa, at the age of seventy-nine. Mary was diagnosed with lymphoma in October 2009 and made the most of her time left with family and friends.
Mary was born in Jackson, Nebraska, in the house her grandfather built. She received her education and graduated from South Sioux City High School in South Sioux City, Nebraska, with the class of 1948. Following graduation she attended secretarial school in Sioux City, Iowa.
On April 28, 1951, Mary was united in marriage to her best friend, Glen Cary at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City. The couple was blessed with the birth of six children. She worked at A.Y. McDonald in Sioux City until Richard was born. Mary was a homemaker and later worked as a teachers aide in Dow City, taught adult education at Wesco Industries before retiring, but continued to volunteer at Nevada Elementary doing what she loved- teaching children to read.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glen in 2006; one daughter, Maggie; one son, Richard; and one sister, Jean Marie. Survivors include one son: Casey and his wife, Heather; three daughters: Jeanie and her husband, Jerry; Cindy and her husband, Joe; Lisa and her husband, Matt; 17 grandchildren; "soon-to-be two great-grandchildren";one daughter-in-law, Diane; three sisters: Peggie; Betty and her husband, Bob; Carol and her husband, Jimmie; two brothers: Danny and his wife, Mona; Sherlock and his wife, Sue; many other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial were held at 3 P.M., Friday, December 10, 2010, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dow City, Iowa. Fr. Andrew Bao Vo served as Celebrant of the Mass with interment in Dow City Cemetery.
