Ruth M. (O'Neill) Hocking, 87, a resident of Ennoble Manor for the past 10 months, died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at Ennoble Manor.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Eugene Kutsch officiating and Bishop Emeritus Arthur J. O'Neill concelebrating. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum, Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 7:45 p.m. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Wednesday at O'Malley Hall.

She was born on Aug. 14, 1921, in East Dubuque, Ill., daughter of Lee and Clara (Runde) O'Neill. She married Melvin F. Hocking on Jan. 27, 1943, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque; he preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 1997.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church for 56 years, where she also was involved in the Rosary Society.

Ruth was a homemaker and was devoted to her faith and family. She took great pride in being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and selflessly gave of her time, love and talents to her family. They all lit up her world. She was looking forward to the next two weddings of her grandchildren, Laura to Niall and Luke to Gabriella, and to the upcoming graduation of her granddaughter, Kristin, from Loras College.

Surviving are three daughters, Sharon (Bob) Soderman, of Jupiter, Fla., Diane Muir, of Dubuque, and Maureen (Dave) Engle, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Brian (SunOg) Berning, of Osan A.F.B., South Korea, Elaine (Brendan) Smith, of Chesterfield, Mo., Laura (fiance, Niall) Berning, of New York City, Ben (Cari) Muir, of Helotes, Texas, Molly (Mark) Omura, of Somerville, Mass., Martha (Ben) Beard, of Evanston, Ill., Melissa (Erik) Barnhill, of Cedar Rapids, Luke (Gabriella) Engle, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Kristin Engle, of Dubuque; She was known as "Gigi" to her 10 great-grandchildren, Adam, Noah and Aiden Berning, Emma and Ian Smith, Chandler and Makenzie Muir, Henry Omura and Olivia and Brookelyn Barnhill; a brother, Bishop Emeritus Arthur J. O'Neill, of Rockford, Ill.; three sisters, Sr. Helen C. O'Neill, of Sinsinawa Mound, Lois Cassidy, of Hernando, Fla., and Erma Schneider, of Dubuque; two sisters-in-law, Luella O'Neill, of East Dubuque, and Betty Riley, of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by a brother, Earl O'Neill; and two brothers-in-law, Floyd Cassidy and Don Schneider.
