Recitation of the Rosary will be in the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home Chapel Friday at 7 p.m. for Taft resident and longtime sports writer Thomas M. "Tom" O'Brien, 79. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church. The pastor of St. Mary's will officiate at both services. Burial will follow in the West Side District Cemetery.

Mr. O'Brien was born in Waterford, Ireland on May 2, 1912 and passed away in a Bakersfield hospital Tuesday morning April 28, 1992.

He moved to Taft in 1921 and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was employed at Taft Union High School in the athletic department for 40 years. He also worked on the West Side Oilfields Recreation Council. He coached track at Taft High and Taft College. He also worked for the "Daily Midway Driller" as a sports writer for more than 45 years.

In 1974 he ad his wife, Dolores, moved to Marina Del Rey where Tom worked for St. Bernard's Catholic High School as a track and football coach. He was a member of the Athletic Congress and officiated at many college level track meets.

He served as a track and field official during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Mr. O'Brien was a member of the Notre Dame Club in Los Angeles.

The O'Brien's moved back to Taft five years ago.

His survivors include his wife, Dolores O'Brien, a son, three daughters, a brother, a sister, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and other relatives.

Friends are invited to call at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home Friday until 8:30 p.m. to pay their respects.
