FRAMINGHAM - Roy John Nurse, 79, of Framingham died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, at home.
He was the husband of Harriet (Lindblad) Nurse for 18 years.
Born in Toronto, Canada, he was the son of the late Roy C. and Gretchen (Fox) Nurse.
Mr. Nurse graduated from the University of Toronto with an honors degree in engineering physics and went on to be instrumental in the United States space program, working for Honeywell Corp. on aerospace navigation systems during the Gemini program, the Charles Draper Lab in Cambridge on Air Force navigation systems and retiring from RCA Inc. at Lincoln Laboratories in Lexington.
He and his first wife of 30 years, Patricia Nurse, raised their children in Clearwater, Fla., from 1959 to 1975. He had resided in the Boston area since 1975.
A resident of Framingham for 31 years, he was a member of several AA groups in the Framingham and Ashland areas.
Mr. Nurse was a Canadian veteran of World War II, serving at the Royal Naval College.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a brother, E. Michael Nurse of Guelph, Ontario; seven children, Peter Nurse and his wife, Jane, of Tunkhannock, Pa., Karl and his wife, Jody, of St. Petersburg, Fla., Thomas and his wife, Elaine, of Clearwater, Fla., Christopher and his wife, Jane Kirkhoff, of Rockville, Md., Michael and his wife, Julie, of Williamsville, N.Y., Mary Howland and her husband, Ken, of Tampa, Fla., and Louise Downey and her husband, John, of Spring Hill, Fla.; 22 grandchildren, Pamela, Jason, Ryan, Shelby, Jordan, James, Andrew, Lauren, Matthew, Abigail, Daniel and Hanna Nurse, Lynn Romanoski, Karlie Sherman, Julie Goding, Laura Unger, Shane, Tyler and Dean Harris, Michael and David Harres and Trevor Howland; six great-grandchildren; and his first wife, Patricia Nurse of St. Petersburg.
He was the father of Francine Nurse, who died at age 5.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m. in Plymouth Church of Framingham, 87 Edgell Road.
There are no visiting hours.
