I first locate James with any certainty in 1860, in District 2, Shelby, Kentucky. James, his wife, (name given as Malinda), son Bartlett and daughter Anna are there, as well as a 13 yr old boy Isaiah Cox, relationship unknown. I was unsuccessful in locating their marriage record.
{{They were likely in Elmwood Twp, Saline Co., MO in 1870, and although some info doesn't quite agree with later censuses, most of it does. Bartlett was 14, but Annie of 1880 was listed as Addie, some genders were reversed: Sallie of 1880 was Sammie in 1870, although right age, Louis of 1880 was Louise in 1870, though the correct age. This type of error does happen in older censuses, so this may be the right family.}}
I next find them with certainty in Shawnee Twp, Bates Co., Missouri in 1880:
Jas. V. Nuckols, 52, born KY ; Linda Nuckols, 45, born KY ; Bartlett H. Nuckols, 23, born KY ; Annie O. Nuckols, 20, born KY ; Louis Nuckols, 18 born KY ; Sallie V. Nuckols, 16, born KY ; George H. Nuckols, 9, born MO ; James Nuckols, 6, born MO ; Willie Nuckols, 4, born MO ; Henry B. Offutt, 26, nephew, born KY
It appears they were in Greenwood Co KS in 1895, where it shows a JV, LE, GH, James W, and Wm Nuckols, as well as a girl names Ema Edwards in Janesville Twp.
The 1900 census gives the following extra information: James was widowed, son George H was born July 1871, son James W was born April 1873, son William D was born Feb 1876. The father and 3 sons were in Pleasant Gap Twp, Bates Co, Missouri.
