The Troy Herald Newspaper, Troy, Lincoln, Missouri, Jan 14, 1869 page 3, On the 29th ult (NOTE: this means Dec 29, 1868), Messrs. Alex. Carlyle, C J Kirtley, and Lewis Nuckols, residing near Waverly, La Fayette County, Missouri, were out shooting birds, when the gun of Mr. Kirtley was accidently discharged, the contents entering the body of Mr. Nuckols, killing him instantly. The deceased was from Woodford County, Kentucky, and had recently purchased a farm near Waverly. He was highly spoken of and his untimely and tragic death has caused great sorrow in the community.
