Benton Mourns the Passing Saturday of Dr. J. D. Nuchols

Benton was cast into gloom Saturday afternoon when it was learned that Dr. J. D. Nuchols had breathed his last. He had been ill with an attack of pneumonia, and later a stroke of paralysis, and his death was not entirely unexpected; but nevertheless, the announcement of his passing was a severe shock to the surrounding county. No death in Benton has caused more universal sorrow.

Dr. Nuchols was 64 years of age and had been a resident of Benton for the past 32 years. He came here from Concord, where he began his practice of medicine after having graduated from the Tennessee Medical College in Knoxville.

No man in Benton had more civic pride than did Dr. Nuchols, and no man did more for the upbuilding of Benton than he. He took great interest in and worked for good roads, and is entitled to as much credit as any other man for the concrete streets of Benton and the building and concreting of the new highway from Benton to Wetmore.

Dr. Nuchols was married to Miss Louise Barnhill of Concord in 1892, and Mrs. Nuchols and two sons, Charles S. Nuchols of this place, and John B. Nuchols of Guild survive. He was a member of the Baptist Church and a member of Ocoee Lodge No. 212 and the Benton Chapter of the Eastern Star. He had held the office of Master of the Masonic Lodge for three or four times, and had the privilege of raising both sons to the Master's Degree.

Funeral rites were held at the Baptist Church Sunday at 2 p.m. conducted by J. W. Lindsey, assisted by the Rev. U. N. Hicks of this place, and Rev. J. W. Stewart of Ducktown
