DURHAM — Frances N. Batcheller, 96, of Oyster River Road, died Nov. 27, 2009 at St. Ann Nursing Home in Dover.
Born July 21, 1913 in Hudson, she was the daughter of Charles L. and Frances (Torrey) Norton. She had resided in Durham for 60 years.
Frances was a 1931 graduate of Brimmer School, Boston, a 1933 graduate of Gloucester School of the Theatre, Gloucester, Mass., and a 1935 graduate of Pierce Secretarial School in Boston.
She was a member of the American Gloxinia and Generiad Society, the American Gesneria Society and the Southwest New Hampshire Mineral Club.
Frances lectured on plant societies, to garden clubs and community groups. She maintained a botanical collection of more than 200 different live gesneriads for research purposes and wrote several publications. In 1977 she was awarded the silver medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society.
Her husband of 51 years, professor Joseph D. Batcheller died in 1988.
She is survived by two children, Denis L. Batcheller of Tiverton, R.I., and Diantha LaVoie and her husband Adrian of Durham; four grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; a sister-in-law, Betty Harclerode of Newmarket; and several nieces and nephews.
At Frances's request, there will be no service. She will be buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Manchester, Mass. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Durham Public Library, 7 Mill Road Plaza, Durham, NH 03824.
