She was the daughter of Caleb Gadd and Louanna Baker Gadd. She married James Nathaniel Northern on July 5, 1922 in Mount Vernon, Kentucky. Together they had nine children. Anna Jane, William Franklin, Delphia, Nannie May, Viola, Katherine Bell, Lou Vernie, Rachel and Joyce.
Jo-Ann was of small stature. At a young age, she came down with Scarlet Fever. Before she came down with the fever, she had red hair and brown eyes. Because of the illness, her hair turned from red to a brunette color. It stayed dark until it turned grey in her later years.
Joan was a housewife. In addition to taking care of the house and children, she helped with the farm work the years her husband did farming.
In her younger years, she loved to square dance. She was known to be the square dance queen of Rockcastle County.
She and her husband joined the Pentecostal movement that was sweeping across America in the early 1900’s. She was a devote Christian all her life.
Jo-Ann died on October 16, 1972.
