Carey was the son of Don and Margaret (Taylor) Nolan. He moved with his mother to California at an early age. Carey was a free-spirit who never married. He lived with, and took care of, his mother, Margaret (Taylor) Nolan, who is buried in Colorado.
He is buried in the same plot with his aunts: Lois (Taylor) Drury and Arlene (Taylor) Nichols; as well as uncle-by-marriage Raymond (Uncle Stub) Drury, and first cousin Fred Lee Drury. His mother is buried in Colorado.
