Obituary from Helena's Independent Record 09/28/2005:
Doris Niven Crawford passed away Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, surrounded by the love of her family and friends. Doris was hospitalized briefly after a fall outside her home at the Gates of the Mountains.
Doris was the third of four children born to Bill and Mary Ellen Niven. She attended Helena schools, spent many happy hours at the family cabin at Moose Lake, and graduated from Helena High School in 1972.
Doris married Tim Crawford on Sept. 26, 1978, in a sunny ceremony on the Missouri River in the Gates of the Mountains wilderness area. Tim and Doris spent their 27 years of married life developing, managing and giving tender loving care to the Gates and to their most successful project, raising their sons, Travis and Chris. Doris loved her three "boys" and relished every opportunity to nourish their adventurous, creative spirits. They teased her unmercifully, and she loved that too.
Doris had a gift for recognizing which of the many people she came in contact with was most in need of her friendship, love and support, and then gave it freely. Some of us got one of her great hugs, some of us were fed a meal or provided with a compassionate listening ear just when we needed it most. Others were given a place to live for a while and became a lifelong part of her family. Doris loved animals and especially her Great Dane, Brooke. She was known for taking in any stray animal that made its way to her door.
Doris was preceded in death by her grandparents, and by her mother, Mary Ellen Niven. She is survived by her loving and much loved husband, Tim, and sons, Travis and Christopher, her father Bill Niven, her sisters Mary Crawford (Dan, Ryan and Dani), Clarice Tronstad (John and Chad), and her brother Alan Niven (Debbie, Shaina and Sidney). Also surviving are her father- and mother-in-law, Lee and Jenny Crawford and their family. Doris and her sister Mary married brothers and doubly connected the families. In-laws include, Bob Crawford (Linda, Angie and Shane), Nick Crawford (Jessie and Jake), Dawn Piazzi, and Ivy Crawford Robertson (Kerry and Amber), Aunt Lil and Uncle Swend Wind, Aunt Midge Bratton and numerous cousins. Doris considered all of her friends to be her family; the list is long and full of love and laughter. Doris taught us all the lesson of love and the value of a good hug. In memory of her, please remember to pass these lessons along each and every day.
A celebration of Dode's life will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 30, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 505 Logan. Following the service, there will be a reception and time to share at Gates of the Mountains.
A memorial fund has been established at Mountain West Bank to help defray the cost of medical expenses.
