Elisabeth "Betty" Nissen, 82, of Oroville, died Sunday. July 1, 2012, succumbing to brain and esophageal cancer.
Born in Wheatridge, CO, Betty grew up in the Denver area and moved to San Diego in 1943, where her father was stationed during WWII. Betty attended Herbert Hoover High School and San Diego State College. She married Donald Nissen in 1947 and had two daughters, Susan and Ann. After living in San Diego, followed by Rancho Del Campo, the Nissens moved to Oroville in 1956.
Betty Nissen was a very active member of the First Congregational Church of Oroville, Quota Club and the Friends of the Library. Betty worked for the Butte County Treasurer/Tax Collectors office for over 20 years and retired in 1992.
Betty Nissen was known affectionately as "the Cookie Monster" as she loved to bake cookies and try new cookie recipes. For many years, as a fund raiser for her church, Betty would donate a batch of cookies a month as a raffle item. Betty also supplied her grandchildren with a monthly "cookie care package" when they were away at college. Betty's cookies were well known and loved by all.
Betty is survived by her two daughters, Susan Nissen Romani of Parker, CO, and Ann Nissen Jokinen and her husband Daniel of Pleasanton, CA. Betty is also survived by three grandchildren: Jennifer and Christie Jokinen of Sacramento, Benjamin and Kyle Jokinen of Seattle, WA, and Lisa and Brad Campiotti of Livermore. Betty had one great-grandchild, Brooklyn Jokinen.
