Mrs. Mary T. Abbe, wife of George H. Abbe, in her 68th year, died sudenly at 8 am today at her home at Stop 24 on the Utica & Mohawk Valley railroad, a short distance east of Stanwix. Three weeks ago last Monday she was in Rome in company with her husband, and at that time contracted a hard cold, but it was not till a week later that a physician was called and she became confined to her bed with a very severe case of double pneumonia, complicated with pericarditis or inflammation of the heart covering, oedema of the lungs following. On Monday evening of this week Mrs. Abbe became considerably worse, but soon regained her lost ground and on Wednesday was apparently much better, Wednesday night she rested well and seemed much better, and her condition led to a feeling of rejoicing that her recovery would be a certainty. While Mr. Abbe and his son, Fred, were about their work shortly before 8 o'clock, Miss Bowen, a trained nurse from Utica, who has had charge of Mrs. Abbe since the beginning of her fatal illness, called them in and her death ensued very quickly.
Mrs. Abbe was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Niles, long residents of the district in the locality below Stanwix, which bears their name, the Niles district, and where she was born and with the exception of a very short time spent in the town of Lee, had always resided.
She is survived by her husband, George H. Abbe, one son, Fred, and three daughters, Mrs. William Graves of Westmoreland, Mrs. John Griffith of New York Mills, and Miss Mary Abbe, residing at home.
In the death of Mrs. Abbe, the community in which she for so many years resided has lost one whose place will be hard to fill. She was ever ready to respond to any appeal for help in time of need and trouble. In their bereavement the family has the sympathy of a host of friends and acquaintances.
