Ed was born Aug. 17, 1920, in Menominee, Mich., to Newton and Anna (Martin) Niewold. He moved to Sycamore in 1931 and was educated there, graduating from Sycamore High School in 1939. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater, landing on Guadalcanal on Sept. 1, 1942, and ending the war on Okinawa in September of 1945. After the war he worked as a carpenter and in heavy construction. Ed retired as Superintendent of Buildings at NIU in 1980.
Ed married Anita Miner on Sept. 2, 1949. Together they had three children, Pamela, Christopher and Peter. Ed is survived by his sons, Christopher (Laura) of Fredericksburg, Via., and Peter (Janet) of Madison, Wis.; and by his grandchildren, Ethan, Megan, Nikki and Jack.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita; daughter, Pamela. and his parents and siblings.
In accordance with Ed's wishes there will be no service prior to his burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Please remember Ed as he always was, full of life.
