Clarence Wilhelm Frederick John Niemeyer was born to Elizabeth (Piepenbrink) and George Niemeyer on October 30, 1924, in Arlington Heights, Illinois-their eighth and last child. He died at his home in San Bernardino, CA on May 21, 2012.
As a child, Clare worked with his parents and siblings in the fertile fields of a family member's farm. In his teens, he helped with construction of O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. Following service in the Marine Corps during WWII, he enrolled at Michigan State College in East Lansing, Michigan.
He met Harriett Arnold, fellow student, and soon they were married. Clare graduated and they promptly left for California, where he had liked being stationed while a Marine. Clare and a friend had built a four wheel trailer, so Clare and Harriett pulled everything they owned across country on it with their '46 Hudson.
Starting in the desert, out of Barstow, Clare began as a Social Worker. He moved up rapidly, eventually the Director of Community Services for San Bernardino County. As marriage progressed and family grew, Clare and Harriett purchased acreage outside of San Bernardino, Evenings, weekends and vacations, Clare planned and personally built a fine four- bedroom home for their family. Harriett's position as school secretary provided extra security and financial support.
Far from family in Illinois and Michigan, there were always dear friends! These friendships, for over sixty years to new in recent weeks, are here to sustain Harriett and family through their earthly separation from Clare;
Joyce Niemeyer and Leo Stager, two sons and one daughter, Victorville CA; Peggy Niemeyer and Henry Mahlstedt, two sons, Redwood City CA; Son, David died at age 49, leaving a daughter and son; Kay Niemeyer Lieberknecht and Doris Ridgeway as well as Kay's daughter, Ukiah CA; Carol Niemeyer, Portland, OR; Diane Gravis, one daughter and three sons, Dumfries VA.
