Charles Haskell Niemeyer, Jr., 92, died Jan. 2, 2013, in Calimesa.
Chuck, as everyone called him, was born on March 8, 1920, in Colorado.
He proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII. Chuck worked as a heavy equipment operator and belonged to Operating Engineers for over 60 years.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the American Legion Post 106. He held many titles in the American Legion including National Executive Committee, Past Sergeant of Arms for the Department of California, Past District #30 Commander and Past Post Commander. Chuck loved the American Legion and was sometimes called "Mr. American Legion."He was a great patriot and loved this country.
Chuck is survived by his daughter Judith E. Tackett of Coupeville,Wash.; his son David C. Niemeyer of Mohave Valley, Arizona; sisters Maxine Dale of Yucaipa and Doris Groom of Pryor, Okla.; partner Leha Head of Yucaipa, eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 1991.
Graveside services and memorial will be held on Friday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.
