Carl Niemann enlisted as a Private in the Army Air Corps on the 5 Oct 1942 in New York City, New York. Following aviation training he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and assigned to the 545th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 384th Bombardment Group (Heavy), stationed in England. His primary specialty was TOGGLIER. [The togglier was responsible for arming and dropping the bombs in lieu of a bombardier. As the war progressed, the bombing formations would drop when the lead aircraft dropped, and the need for skilled bombardiers decreased.]

On 7Jul 1944, SSGT Niemann was the Togglier on a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, specifically B-17G Aircraft 44-6147. Their mission was to bomb the Me-109 Aircraft Factory in Leipzig, Germany. A review of this aircraft's Sortie Reports shows that this was the first mission for SSGT Niemann on this aircraft. Unfortunately, the aircraft suffered a mid-air collision enroute to the target, which killed six of the nine crew members, to include SSGT Niemann. From the Sortie Report: COLLIDED WITH 42‑102442 OVER ENGLAND DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS; CRASHED 8 MILES NW RIDGEWELL AT WITHERSFIELD, SUFFOLK, UK.

SSGT Carl Niemann was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Cambridge, England.
