Mary Nielson was the daughter of Niels and Sissa Nielson. She was born February 20, 1867, in Gardstanger, Malmo, Sweden, and came to Millville at age six. She attended the old rock school.

On March 15, 1883, Mary and Neils Anderson were married. Neils was a native of Ostra Odarsly, Sweden, the son of Hans and Kama Anderson. He came to Millville at the age of thirteen and lived with the George O. Pitkin family.

Niels was an ambitious man; starting with two cows, he built up a herd of over one hundred. Niels bought a vast amount of mountain land where he kept his cattle, and he also herded for the Cattlemen's Association. He was a stockholder in the Grain and Flour Mill, which he had helped to build.

Mary was a hard-working woman. In addition to raising her own children, she raised her grandson, Reed Anderson, when his mother died. Mary loved music; and she played the harmonica and accordion by ear. She took care of her mother and her father-in-law in their later years. After the death of Niels, she was self sustaining until she was seventy-five years of age. She kept 200 laying hens, and she milked and cared for two cows. She died January 3, 1956.

Niels and Mary were the parents of: Niels Wilhelm (Sarah Genevieve Jessop, Malinda Juneth Olson), Andrew Herman (died in childhood), Ida Amanda (Abraham Jensen), Joseph Leon (Maude Mae Morris), Johnny Edwin (Alta Bench) and Hyrum Curtis (died at birth).
