Mildred Hall Garrett Nielsen
1915 - 2013

Mildred was born December 29, 1915, in Nephi, Utah, the third child of John Charles and Pearl Beatrice Ingram Hall. She had two older siblings, Ray and Delma, and later came Norma, Tom, and Betty. Life was fun growing up in Nephi, with plenty of friends and neighbors to play with. Mildred skipped right by third grade, and graduated from Juab High School in 1934. She was an award winning swimmer and a recognized scholar.

At Snow College, she caught the eye of Wallace Garrett, a member of the school basketball team. The couple was married in the Manti Utah LDS Temple on June 27, 1935. They built their first home in Nephi and their daughter, Barbara, was born there. Later, a son, Michael, and daughter, Mary Margaret, were added to the family. As a member of The Churvh of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mildred had many callings: Junior Sunday School coordinator, Primary president, Young Women president, and many stake callings. She was a recognized 4-H leader, teaching many girls to sew and taking them to camp every summer at Camp Dad and Sons. She was active in community affairs. She was president of the Lady JCs, built Ute Stampede floats, and sewed many Miss Nephi formals.

Wallace died suddenly on June 5, 1978. Following his death, Mildred served a mission in Oakland, California. Six years later, she married Merlin Nielsen of Moroni. They served a mission in West Virginia. They moved to Provo and made many good memories and friends in the Edgemont 7th Ward. Merlin died on June 26, 2004. A few years later, Mildred moved to the Victorian House in Levan, Utah, where she renewed acquaintances with former coworkers and friends from Nephi. The champion bingo player of Levan's Victorian House, Mildred Hall Garrett Nielsen, has cleared her card and gone home. She was 98.

Mildred is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Morris) Ostler and Mary (Ray) Pfeifer; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Ann Garrett George; a sister, Betty Grange; 13 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren. A son, Michael, preceded her in death.
