Andrew enlisted for Civil War army service, July 22, 1861, and was placed as a private in Co. F, 11th Pennsylvania Reserves which was then redesignated the 40 Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry. He was captured at the Battle of the Wilderness, May 5, 1864 and sent to the prisoner of war stockade at Andersonville(Georgia). He was then transferred on paper to the 190th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry, June 1, 1864. He died at Andersonville stockade and was apparently buried as an "Unknown U.S. Soldier" there in the prison Cemetery. His brothers Lacy and John also served in the same units.
