Ina Leona Nichols was born on 12 Nov 1908 in Cozad, Dawson, NE. She worked as a switchboard operator before 1953 in Carleton, Thayer, NE. She later worked for the Modern Venetian Blinds Company in Omaha, NE and eventually at the Lincoln General Hospital where she prepared and sterilized needles and surgical instruments.
After her marriage to Raymond, she sold cream and eggs. She also raised a large garden, canned produce from the garden. She died on 27 Feb 1997 in Blue Valley Nursing Home, Hebron, Thayer,
NE. She was buried on 3 Mar 1997 in Belvidere Cemetery, Belvidere, Thayer, NE. The funeral services for Ina were held at the Blue Valley Lutheran Home at 2 P.M. with Rev. Warren Schomming officiating. Ruth Summers, organist accompanied Hugh Clark.
Pallbearers were: Rex Johnson, Mark Hintz, Marc Anguiano, Matt Hintz, Rick Hintz and Kent Volkmer.
Honorary bearers were: Kale and Clayton Hintz, Kevin and Sarah Volkmer, Alycia, Emily and Cory Hintz, Benjamin Hintz, Chelsi and Carli Johnson and Matthew Anguiano.
She was a Methodist in First United Methodist Church of Hebron, Thayer, NE. Ina was the first child of Hiram and Mary Jane Nichols. Her parents had 4 boys and 3 girls. One of her sisters was Anna Marie Nichols.
As a young girl she helped her parents with milking, raising chickens and gathering eggs. Her father taught her to recognize birds by the sounds of the unique songs and cultivated her intense love of songbirds. She traveled by train and attended Nebraska City School for the Blind through the 11th grade where she was an honor roll student. She learned to sing and play the piano while attending school.
Music was an important part of their family entertainment. Ina frequently accompanied her brother, Irvin, Howard, Harley and Willis while they sang. Later she sang and played the piano at the Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron, NE. She was also a talented poet and wrote many inspirational poems for various occasions.
Ina was a member of the Belvidere Legion Auxiliary and assisted with community events and projects.
She and Raymond moved to her father's house in Belvidere, where she cared for her father until he became a resident of the Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron. She also loved to play with her grandchildren. She taught her granddaughter Tammy to play the piano by ear.
Following Raymond's death in 1982, she moved to Hebron and lived independently in Hebron until a stroke left her paralyzed on the left side in 1990. She then moved to the Blue Valley Lutheran Home where she lived until her death in 1997. Parents: Hiram Clinton Nichols and Mary Jane Brooks.
She was married to Raymond Lee Walter Hintz on 5 Jan 1955 in Fairbury, Jefferson, NE. After her sister, Marie's death, Ina helped Raymond with his two young boys. She and Raymond married in 1955 and lived on a farm three miles east of Belvidere, NE...Received information from Sharlene Miller.
