Civil War Union Officer. Newton was twenty-one years old when he enlisted in New York City, New York on December 14, 1861. Two days later, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to Company I of the 90th New York Infantry (“The Hancock Guard”) to begin his three year enlistment. The young officer died at Key West, Florida while on garrison duty on September 13, 1862.
